The mate burilado (carved gourd) is created using a tool called a buril—from which the craft takes its name. The artisan cuts detailed designs into the gourd and decorates it through a technique known as fire-branding, using heat from a small stove made of quiwual (a tree native to the Andes) branches.
Painted gourds, by contrast, are decorated using ink-soaked brushes.
